Start Learning Mandarin with a First Conversation Cycle
Choose Mandarin and one everyday use case, then learn sound, pinyin, characters and meaning together. Complete a short introduction, three usable sentences and a next-day review record.
Choose the language and course
Choose the variety you want to use: this guide covers Mandarin. Select one beginner course with audio and daily expressions, such as Coursera’s Chinese for Beginners. Check its current enrollment conditions when joining. Use that course as the sequence for lessons and pronunciation examples.

Learn a sound-and-sentence cycle
Start with greetings, your name and a simple question. For each expression, keep its characters, pinyin, meaning and source audio. Listen, repeat the tones, identify the core words, then substitute your own information into the complete sentence. The practice sequence here is original.
Create your first three sentences
Use these authored examples: 你好。Nǐ hǎo. — Hello. 我叫安娜。Wǒ jiào Ānnà. — My name is Anna. 你叫什么名字?Nǐ jiào shénme míngzi? — What is your name? The pinyin shows citation tones; in the greeting the first third tone changes in connected speech. Compare the course’s phrase audio and then replace the name with yours.

Review and choose the next step
The next day, recall the three sentences before reading, compare with the text and audio, and record the word or sound you need to revisit. If you can recall isolated words but not a sentence, return to the complete course example. Use Dictionary for supplied meanings, examples and pronunciation text, and the pinyin guide for syllable reading.
